Why we blog…
with Ekaterina Botziou
Something different for you today: Ekaterina Botziou, a blog about life and being Greek!
How long have you had the blog?
I started the blog back in July 2011 so it will be coming up to its 2nd birthday soon!
What was the reason for starting your blog?
The blog initially began as a little hobby – it was a place where I could unleash my inner voice – where I shared stories about my Greek showbiz dabbling life, a few Greek recipes, poems, and the odd theatre review. Since then the blog has become a platform for all my career goals – I continue to write about Greek life and post articles about my experiences within the film industry, reviews and promotions on theatre, film, books and magazines, videos, and collaborations with other bloggers. Basically the blog fulfils my all consuming need to share my rants, raves, recipes, and general Greek philosophy about life with the world and hopefully gets a few laughs in too.
What is your constant inspiration?
I have always loved writing – it’s a form of release – when I write, things become clearer. I could be writing a piece for my blog, an article for a magazine, or simply an email to a friend – I find putting my thoughts on paper very cathartic. I go through periods of inspiration and like any writer there are times when I get the dreaded writers block, and other times when I could write ‘til kingdom come. I try not to force my writing – unless of course I have a deadline to meet!
I’m a very motivated person in general and I find inspiration from many different sources – for example, my new recent series of blog posts entitled ‘ASK THE GREEK ORACLE’ was inspired after I received a number of emails from women who were very complimentary about my book and how I had helped them to understand the strange behavior of their Greek men. Some of them asked me for further advice, so I thought, why not turn these questions into an agony aunt section on my blog for all to enjoy?
How would you describe your blog?
My blog mainly focuses on Greek life and the entertainment industry, but I also write theatre, tv, film and book reviews, poetry and recipes as well as an agony aunt section for women dealing with Greek men! It’s a total mix designed to appeal to all readers, but everything has a Greek twist to it.
Where does your blog name come from?
The title is meant to sum up my life in general: EKATERINA BOTZIOU: IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME! ‘It’s all greek to me’ is an idiom / dead metaphor in English, expressing that something is not understandable – basically Greek life is very confusing!
What are your longer term aims for your blog?
I would like to continue to provide readers with a blog that makes them laugh and helps them to understand the Greek culture as well as continuing to provide reviews, recipes and other posts about the entertainment business that I have experienced. I try to keep the blog as varied as possible but with a common theme so that people can dip in and out whenever they like. I already write for a few Greek/Cypriot newsletters and magazines so it would be amazing if my blog leads to more freelance work. I also hope to help other bloggers promote their own work, particularly those who have ties to the Greek community so that we can all become one big fat Greek blogging family!
Any final words for my readers?
“The man may be the head, but the woman is the neck, and she can turn the head any way she wants”. Don’t forget it!
